Background: Olafur Thordarson built furniture from a young age. Numerous hand crafted lamps, tables, woodcarvings, figurines and multitudes of designs exist from his earlier years (1972-1980). His sense for materials and craftmanship crystallised at the age of 12, when he studied with Icelandic master woodcarver Hannes Flosason. After completing his Master of Architecture degree from Columbia University in 1990, he went to work for designer Gaetano Pesce, where he for 7 years designed various furniture for the well known Italian. Highly individualistic in his work, Thordarson's main influences include paintings of Calder, Mondrian and Miro, along with the works of Hundertwasser and Antonio Gaudi.
